Leland - Schools & Libraries

Leland, often called Fishtown, has enough history and aura to fill a few local books. Its port faces west to the great expanse of Lake Michigan and the Manitou Islands, and to the east it is bordered by the lengthy Lake Leelanau. Wandering the picturesque fish shanty shops, local eateries, and lounging about the marina park will fill a visitor, on any given day, with a tired, but satiated sense of being. On another day, while ferrying across the gray-blue rolling miles of Lake Michigan over to North Manitou Island, a traveler may feel deeply introspective. The experiences of the quaint town of Leland seem to loom in everyone's memory as uniquely precious. When it comes to pioneering spirit and stick-to-itiveness, the old-timers, who hang out at the Early Bird restaurant, can tell tales that verifies truth is stranger than fiction. The Leland River winds its way through town adding the bustle of boats and fishing activities. Gulls cry and wheel about, sail rigging clangs in the harbor, the careful beauty of preserved old homesteads line the streets, there is an abundance of amiable businesses, and an historical museum not to be missed, all this and more makes Leland a favorite destination…by vessel or vehicle.
